BATAM BUILD

I found it to be a humbling and rewarding experience especially after we met the family that would live in the house; they were truly grateful. I feel very fortunate to have been involved in such a programme and was surprised to see how much we were able to achieve with our limited knowledge. I have been on other charity events but I felt that the Batam Build Programme offered real tangible results.

The team had a great time! We feel that we've been twice blessed as we got to bond and fellowship with each other as well as with our Indonesian friends.

... we are all back safe and sound now at our desks in Singapore, if a little the worse for wear in terms of a few small aches and pains...and in some cases a little sunburn!  However we all had a fantastic time taking part in this trip, and I think I can safely speak on behalf of everyone in saying that we found the two days to be extremely rewarding & something we would definitely recommend to anyone thinking of doing the same.  I personally have also gained a massive appreciation and respect for the work that your guys do on a daily basis & in such difficult conditions - it's very easy for us to come over for a couple of days and then be able to return to our air-conditioned offices - those guys are doing a truly fantastic job & deserve a lot of credit.

The programme is very well organised, and we had absolutely no issues with the way everything was managed - the whole thing went very smoothly indeed from start to finish.

GLOBAL VILLAGE

We had a wonderful GV week in Udon Thani.  Everything went as planned and there were no unexpected events.  A team of 20 students and two teachers from the International School of Bangkok was also in Udon Thani for that week and together, we finished four houses in four days so four families have had their dream of a new home come true.

The trip was really very memorable. The students definitely enjoyed it and learnt alot from it. The visit to Sarnelli House had a very big impact on them, many cried on the way back. Oh, did Tasanee or Gib tell you that we completed 3 houses in 4 days! Tasanes said we were the only group who didn't take tea breaks and work over time! She must be thinking the teachers are slave-drivers. Haha... But interesting, the students were the ones who were so task oriented and it is amazing how they organised themselves to work together.

I'm contemplating leading another team there if there is an opportunity. I would really love to go back again. I miss the place and the people there alot.

We might have given them a house. But they have given us so much more. They have shown us what true hospitality is, which is like an exquisite jewel in this dog-eat-dog world that we are accustomed to.

In this short 5 days, we have learnt that despite our differences - race, language and religion pose no obstacles to true love, kindness and charity.

If you are thinking of embarking on a GV project, JUST DO IT!!! For it will be a journey of self-discovery, one which you will always cherish for the rest of your life.

Thanks guys for a truly memorable experience.  For me it was the giving, the building, the passion and the people.  And how it all came together so effortlessly.  Those short 6 days has taken up a big chapter in my book.

It was obvious how joyful the new homeowners were because of their new house.  We all felt a sense of accomplishment when we saw tears of joy exploding from the new homeowners.  That moment helped me understand why Mr. Millard Fuller wanted to start the Habitat for Humanity Foundation and I will definitely love to volunteer again.  Moreover, even though we built hope for the new homeowners, I believe there was more that I received from the Filipinos than our group gave.  This interim trip was definitely an excellent chance which taught me to be grateful for all the things I have including a luxurious home and access to many modern items such as the computer.

The students had an enjoyable experience and more importantly, learnt valuable lessons.

DISASTER RESPONSE

Things I've Learned with Habitat

    • We are very wasteful!
    • We take a lot of blessings for granted
    • Corporate skills mean very little in disaster zones
    • We don't need a lot to be happy
    • As a team, we could help many more than on our own
    • If the survivors could start again after such a huge loss, nothing that will happen to me that I cannot cope

Amy Lee, Team Member
Team Oikos - Galle, Sri Lanka (Mar 2005)

It's about 3 weeks since we returned from hikkaduwa. It has been a good week there & we are glad that we were able to bring laughters & fun to the locals there...even for just a week. Of course it saddened us as they relate to us their losses, love-ones & properties. We pray that our love in action will help them to see God's love even in the midst of such devastation.
