SINGAPORE: Some 100 students gave up their shoes to walk barefoot around the Singapore Management University (SMU) to attend classes on Thursday.

This was part of a week-long "Bare Your Sole" campaign, from March 16 to 20, which included activities such as video screening, an exhibition and giving away of collaterals.

Students had the chance to experience the lives of children from third world countries, who are often exposed to broken glass and infected syringes.

For the first time in Singapore, a massive barefoot walk is being planned for June to help raise funds to build shelters for needy people around the world.

Organisers Habitat for Humanity Singapore, SMU and Victoria Junior College are targeting some 1,000 participants.

The public can support "Bare Your Sole 2009" by giving cash donations and shoes. For every pair of shoes donated, shoe manufacturer Crocs will sponsor a pair of shoes for children in third world countries. The donated shoes can be placed in bins situated at the SMU concourse.
