Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s ‘Operation Homeworks’ was conceived to improve the living condition of the elderly, the sick and the physically-challenged living at one-room flats all over the island.
Our surveys have shown that many elderly people and the physically-challenged live alone, or are without any regular domestic help. Their homes are usually cluttered with all sorts of items, including discarded objects and expired food items. Being elderly, sick or handicapped, these people in need are unable to clean their homes effectively. This often gives rise to safety and health issues. Habitat for Humanity believes that we should not allow any human being to live in an unsafe or unhygienic environment.
In Operation Homeworks, Habitat mobilizes volunteers to do a proper clean up of these homes. Operation Homeworks will work to achieve the following objectives:
1. Improve the SAFETY of the home. We do this by clearing the clutter, doing simple repair works and improving access in the living environment to reduce the risk of accident and fire.
2. Improve the SANITATION of the home. We do this by removing rotting food items, replacing bedbug-infested furniture, re-painting stained walls, cleaning and washing affected areas of the home.
This program is typically conducted with many volunteers coming together, cleaning up many homes at one session. We also conduct cleaning for ad-hoc requests from those in need, cleaning one unit at a time.
