Overview on Volunteering

What are Volunteer Programmes?
Habitat for Humanity's Volunteer Prgrammes are a series of short-term trips designed to provide an educational and spiritual experience within a cross-cultural environment. Our objectives usually are met through new relationships that team members form with each other and with their host affiliates. By living and working with the host community, participants have an opportunity to personally witness and contribute to Habitat for Humanity's efforts to eliminate substandard housing throughout the world.

There are four programmes that Habitat for Humanity Singapore offers:

1. Global Village
2.Batam Build

3. Disaster Response
4. Special Builds

How are HFH work trips different?
Unlike tour groups, our itineraries are not highly structured. Itineraries are balanced with plenty of work, rest and free time.

Based on the team, Habitat offers various programmes to cater to the needs by offering trips that ranges from one day to trips that last about two weeks.

Our hosts offer teams a "backdoor" welcome to their community and encourage teams to visit local cultural "treasures". Team members travel, live, work, pray, share and eat together, often in primitive settings. Traveling and working in foreign countries can be as frustrating as it is rewarding. It is vital for participants to remain flexible and committed to their team leader and team members. The first command ment for every team member is: Be a blessing.

With humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than yourself. Philippians 2:3b

How do groups sign up to go?
Groups should call our office to request available locations and dates from the Programme Coordinator. Scheduling a team should be done early. It takes at least three to four months to properly prepare for an international assignment. Team size commonly ranges from 10 to 15 participants.

Who are your team leaders?
Team leaders are volunteers who offer their services to Habitat for Humanity and to each team member. Team leaders are responsible for planning various aspects of the Global Village trip. They select the team members and collect various information about them, establish the itinerary plan, and work out the budget for the GV trip with plenty of help from the Habitat Singapore office and the host community.

Can I lead a short-term work team?
If there are no slots available for you, you may sign up as a Team Leader. As a Team Leader, you will be able to choose your choice of country and time frame (subject to availability of the hosting country). You may gather your group of participants or request Habitat Singapore to help in the publicity for the recruitment for your team. Potential team leaders should fill out a team leader application. All team leaders are approved by the Global Village department and supported by our Programme Coordinators.
