As you may be aware, Habitat for Humanity Singapore has been engaged in the cleaning of houses for elderly persons in need, in a program we named “Operation Homeworks”. In a typical session, we would be cleaning about a dozen houses with more than a hundred volunteers. This typically takes a couple of weeks to prepare, as the scale of the project is large.
As news of our program spread, we have been receiving many calls from hospital staff, social workers and members of the public asking for our help. Typically, the request would be for us to help a single person in need, e.g. a recently-discharged hospital elderly patient whose house is not in a hygienic condition for him to return to.
These requests are random, and less predictable in nature; nonetheless, the needs of these persons in need are very real indeed. To help such single-unit cases which we term as ‘Single-Unit Operation Homework’, we would need volunteers to standby and be ready to be on-call, reacting to the call for help rapidly. We would like to encourage you and your friends to sign up as a team, committing to standby for a call-to-duty by month. You may form a group of 6 volunteers, and sign up for this Single-Unit Operation Homework by month. There is a donation fee involved for each person. This donation will go towards all the purchase of materials as well as to augment the operation cost and to sustain the project.
While your team can do the clean-up at any time, typically, this activity happens on a Saturday. We will be working with the relevant social worker and confirm a date for clean-up. We will then inform the team leader at least 1 week before the scheduled date, and the team leader will activate his team for this program. Team leaders will also be informed if there are no activities scheduled for that month. If more than 2 teams apply for the same month, we will assign the slots based on our own criteria.
Habitat for Humanity Singapore will provide all the necessary logistic support for this program.
