How does housing affect education?

Housing stability is the foundation for learning.

Asia statistics:

  • Habitat research has shown that widescale improvements on housing in informal settlements can help increase life expectancy by 4% and school attendance by 28%, as well as boost GDP of up to 10.5%.

  • Disaster-driven displacement directly disrupts schooling — e.g. in 2024, the landfall of Typhoon Yagi affected over 280,000 homes and displaced 122,000 people in Vietnam, a clear case of housing instability interrupting children's education and stability.

Mr Dasar's Story

This opportunity has transformed our lives, and we are deeply thankful. We hope that their kindness will continue to inspire and uplift other families in need.”

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Dasar lost his job.

To provide for his family, he converted a room in his home into a donut-making business. Unfortunately, due to the weight of their financial burden, the eldest of their 3 children had to temporarily drop out of school.

In addition to their financial worry, Mr Dasar’s wife, Mrs Aprilia has been struggling with mental health issues, which get worse from time to time.

The turning point for Mr Dasar and his family came in August 2024, when partners and volunteers, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity Indonesia and Habitat for Humanity Singapore partnered with the homeowners to transform their home, giving them a proper place to live and conduct their business.

With their new home, the family now has a proper place of business that supports their livelihood, and their children can return to education and look to the future.
