A Champion for Change

For many, graduation marks a time of new beginnings and a search for purpose. For one dedicated volunteer, Jowayne, it was the start of a profound journey with Habitat for Humanity Singapore. Initially exploring various programmes out there, she signed up for a one-time volunteering session with Project HomeWorks.
“After my first Project HomeWorks session, I was struck by how intentional, respectful, and genuinely caring the team was toward the homeowners,” she recalls. What began as a single experience quickly transformed into a recurring commitment, fuelled by a desire to contribute meaningfully.
Among the many impactful moments in her volunteer journey since 2023, one homeowner’s story and encounter stand out. “At the start of the session, she was visibly anxious and stressed out… understandably so, given how vulnerable it is to let strangers into your home and have them sort through your personal belongings,” she explains. However, as the session progressed, a connection was formed between the homeowner and group of volunteers. She began to share her life stories, and volunteers reciprocated, creating a space of trust and openness.
“Slowly, we saw her begin to relax and trust us,” she says. By the session’s end, the homeowner’s gratitude was immense, and she invited the entire team to stay for lunch. This experience, she reflects, was a powerful lesson in humility, highlighting the profound connections that can be forged through service.
What compels Jowayne to power on as a HomeWorks Champion? It’s the stark reality that many individuals and families in Singapore still live in unsafe or unsanitary conditions. She believes such environments “can create constant stress that affects mental well-being.”
Being a part of Project HomeWorks has shown her that even seemingly small actions can contribute effectively. “Knowing that I can make a real impact, one home at a time, is what keeps me showing up,” she affirms. Her dedication is a testament to the transformative power of volunteering and the lasting difference one person can make in the lives of others.
