A Volunteer's Heart of Service

For volunteer Abhay, the aspiration of bringing comfort, safety, and dignity to those in need is a deeply personal one, driven by a personal commitment to community service.

Having grown up in a small city in India, the concept of community care was ingrained in daily life. "It was natural for the community to care for the elderly and families in need," he shared. "It was a part of everyday life and something I truly believed in." However, this sense of communal responsibility often felt absent in the developed cities where he lived more recently, prompting a search for meaningful volunteering opportunities.

This search led him to Habitat for Humanity Singapore and its home rehabilitation programme, Project HomeWorks. The goal of improving living conditions for vulnerable individuals and families resonated deeply. "When I learned about their mission, it really connected with me," Abhay explained.

Starting as a volunteer, he quickly witnessed the transformative power of seemingly small efforts. "I saw first-hand how even small efforts could make a big difference in someone’s life. That experience touched me deeply." This profound realisation ignited a desire to do more, leading to his decision to sign up for Habitat Singapore’s training for HomeWorks Champions, and committing to regular involvement in Project HomeWorks.

Witnessing Transformation: The Impact of Project HomeWorks

One of the most impactful aspects of this personal journey has been leading young student volunteers. Many of these students are encountering this side of Singapore for the first time, often arriving quietly and unsure. "But as we guide them, encourage them, and explain why this work matters, I see a real change in them," Abhay shares.

The most touching moments are witnessing these young people get involved with "full heart - cleaning, painting, and making the home safer and more comfortable." It's a powerful shift in mindset. "They realise that even as young people, they can create real change. They can bring hope, comfort, and dignity to someone’s life just by giving a few hours of their time." This experience serves as a powerful reminder that "change doesn’t always come from big actions. It can be small, kind efforts. And young people have so much power to make the world better, one home at a time."

His Enduring Motivation: Smiles, Relief, and Connection

What sustains Abhay's dedication? It's the profound feeling after every Project HomeWorks session. "The biggest takeaway for me is seeing the smile and relief on the faces of the families and individuals we help," he explains. "It’s such a real and honest moment, you can see how much it means to them."

Equally motivating is the joy and fulfilment seen in the volunteers themselves, whether it's their first time or a returning visit. There's always "this sense of purpose and connection." This demonstrates an undeniable truth: "we’re not just fixing up homes - we’re touching lives. Being part of something bigger, something that unites people to do good, provides a strong sense of meaning. It’s a simple way to make the world a little better, and that’s what keeps me coming back."
