Project HomeWorks

Addressing Housing Challenges in Singapore

Project HomeWorks was launched in 2006 to address the hidden housing challenges faced by vulnerable individuals in Singapore. Many of these individuals have limited financial means, social support, and mobility, making it difficult for them to maintain safe and sanitary living conditions.

By partnering with social service agencies, we identify vulnerable individuals and families, and work with volunteers to rehabilitate their homes. Our efforts include decluttering to reduce fire risks and prevent accidents, discarding expired food to improve health and well-being, and removing pest-infested furniture to create a safer and sanitary environment.

A Project HomeWorks Experience:

Get ready to make a real difference! Here's what you can expect:

Duration: 4 to 5 hours

Team size: Up to 5 volunteers per home

Age requirement: Minimum 15 years old

On-site support: Each team will have a dedicated Habitat staff or HomeWorks Champion assigned to guide the team with the rehabilitation works required for the day.

Experience: Not required. Briefing, training and supervision will be provided at each Project HomeWorks session.

Common tasks:

  • Decluttering and Organizing: Sort through belongings, discard expired consumables, discard damaged furniture and help create a more organised and functional space. (Be prepared for some lifting!)

  • Deep Cleaning: Give rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms a thorough clean.

  • Painting and Caulking: Bring new life to walls, doors, and gates with a fresh coat of paint, and seal up cracks and gaps to prevent reinfestation of bed bugs and other pests.

  • Furniture Assembly: Set up basic furniture items, such as metal bed frame, drawer sets.

Essential supplies provided: Gloves, Face Mask, Habitat Volunteer T-Shirt, Cleaning Supplies, Paint Supplies and Gear as necessary.

Pests and bed bug infestations are a common challenge in some of the homes we work in. For the well-being of our volunteers and to ensure the success of our home rehabilitation efforts, Habitat Singapore works with professional pest control services. These experts conduct fumigation approximately two days prior to a scheduled Project HomeWorks session in affected homes.
